A greenstick fracture is an incomplete break that can occur in a child's more flexible bone. One side bends while the other breaks. A child's ability to move the limb does not rule out a fracture after a fall.

Symptoms and reasons to seek assessment

Pain, tenderness, swelling or an altered shape may occur. An open wound, marked deformity, numbness or a cold hand or foot requires urgent attention. Do not try to straighten the limb or decide on the injury from a photograph.

Assessment and treatment considerations

Clinical assessment and X-rays help define the fracture and alignment. Treatment may involve a splint or cast, and selected injuries need correction by a trained clinician. Follow-up checks position, healing and safe return to activity. Cast care and warning signs should be explained to the caregiver.

Prepare for an assessment in Matamoros

Bring available studies and reports, a list of medications and a short account of how symptoms affect your daily life. Write down what you would like treatment to improve. Ask which findings explain the concern, what options are reasonable and when progress should be reviewed.

Frequently asked question

Can a child return to sport as soon as pain stops?

Not necessarily. Healing and the risk of reinjury need review before sport is resumed.
